DISCUSSION “FRESH POLITICAL IDEA FOR NORTHERN EUROPA”

Will be opened on the 30.06. and from 16:00 till 17:30
By PROVIDUS;
IN COLLABORATION WITH Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania

What offers Northern Europe new parties that started their work from the niche – Pirates from the fight for information disclosure, but the Feminist Party – for gender equality? Will the political values such as human rights, openness, environmental sustainability, equality and empathy prevail over people’s longing for a strong hand? Do we need political parties at a European level? How to successfully create a new party and address the voters in the 21st century?

At the event organized by PROVIDUS, we will discuss new, innovative Northern European political movements that are outside the traditional left / right party spectrum and have gained increasing popularity in recent years.

The discussion will be held in English with a translation into Latvian.

This discussion is organized with the support of the EU program “Europe for Citizens” and the Danish Cultural Institute. PROVIDUS is responsible for the content of the event.

Uffe Elbæk the former Danish Culture Minister, nowadays Uffe Elbæk represents the new Green party The Alternative in Denmark, which he launched in November 2013. Uffe Elbæk will take part in the discussion “fresh political idea’s from northern Europe”

On the 27th of November 2013, Uffe Elbæk hosted a press conference where he announced the formation of a new “green” political party named The Alternative. The Party did not have a traditional political program, but wanted to develop it together with the citizens through so-called “political laboratories”.

During the springtime of 2014, 20 political laboratories were conducted all over Denmark, where more than 700 citizens participated. Shortly after, on the 24th of May, the first crowdsourced political program became a reality. The political program is updated regularly as the specific policies are developed through the political laboratories, and then verified and endorsed by the unit of political decision-makers in the Alternative, Politisk Forum.

On February the 23rd Uffe Elbæk made use of Twitter to break the news, that The Alternative had gathered enough signatures to become eligible to take part in the forthcoming parliamentary election. This was officially confirmed and accepted by the Interior Ministry the 23rd of March, where the party was granted the letter Å on the electoral lists.
