“Taste of the Future” festival

On November 20, a special event will take place at Priekuļi Primary School in Cēsis County — the “Taste of the Future ” festival, where students, parents and teachers will learn together how to cook tasty and responsibly, reducing food waste.

The festival’s special guest will be chef Nils Ģēvele — winner of the Michelin Young Chef Award! He will lead a masterclass where he will show how to creatively use leftover products and give them a new taste and life. There will also be an opportunity to learn fermentation techniques, make herb butter, and participate in other creative workshops.

“Allowing children to serve themselves is the most effective way to reduce food waste in educational institutions and to tailor the cafeteria menu to include dishes that children enjoy. The next step is to use leftovers in the kitchen instead of throwing them away. They can be reused to make something new or, for example, offered to students, teachers, or staff to take home. Latvia already has some good examples; hopefully, more and more schools will follow,” says Maija Krastiņa from Zero Waste Latvia.

The festival program will be diverse, featuring:
  • a visual and musical performance “From Surplus to Change”;
  • a presentation of students’ observations on food waste;
  • a panel discussion “From Seed to the Last Bite”;
  • creative workshops for all ages!

The “Taste of the Future” festival is the beginning of a larger Baltic-wide project “Food for the Future: A Cross-Baltic School-to-Community Approach to Zero Waste”, implemented by the Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in cooperation with the Embassy of Denmark to Latvia and the Embassy of Sweden to Latvia. The project activities in Latvia are implemented in cooperation with the Eco Schools network and Priekuļi Primary school.

The project is financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers Nordic Embassy Cooperation Program.
