Christian IV Ensemble “Music to Joy and Freedom”

On the 17th of January the Danish baroque ensemble Christian IV kicked off the Danish contribution to the Latvian centenary celebration. The concert took place in the beautiful church of St. John in the middle of the old town of Riga. The ensemble lid up the church with a variety of classical German songs written by Martin Luther to more contemporary Danish, Estonian and Latvian pierces. The tagline was “music to joy and freedom” and besides celebrating the centenary it was also a tribute to Martin Luther and the 500-year celebration of the reformation. For ninety minutes the singers created a magical atmosphere in the church, that the audience thoroughly enjoyed.

The nine-person ensemble consists of professional singers and is led by conductor Ruben Munk, and have played for many years in Denmark. This was their first times abroad, and they got a warm welcome from the Latvian listeners.
