Centenary Celebration Programme

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania celebrate the 100th anniversary of their independence – a remarkable event and a reason to accentuate and develop the strong ties between Denmark and the three countries. We celebrate the centenary jointly with a number of initiatives – events for 2018 as well as long-term actions.

Denmark and three Baltic states share a deep-rooted historical and cultural friendship. This was made particularly clear after the regaining of independence in 1990-91, which received considerable Danish support. Our common mindset and core values based on independence and freedom are highlighted by strong and close cooperation between our countries, covering almost all areas.

Our countries share the belief that cultural and artistic expression and exchange are intrinsically valuable and create strong, open and resilient societies.

We are small, open and competitive economies, and we benefit from this. Creativity and innovation are top priorities, paving the way for further cultural exchange and sustainable development.

The geopolitical circumstances of the Baltic Sea Region call for a continued joint focus and a close partnership within the EU and NATO, stimulating continued understanding and cooperation.

All of this forms the background of extensive Danish input to the republics’ centenary celebrations. The programme includes high-level visits, classical and contemporary music concerts, leisure and sports events, art and urban projects with an expected long-run impact.
